Overview
Halebeedu – The Ancient Capital of the Hoysalas
Halebeedu, formerly known as Dwarasamudra, is a historic town in Karnataka located just 17 km from Belur. Once the glorious capital of the Hoysala dynasty, this heritage site showcases the artistic brilliance and cultural legacy of South India.
The Hoysalas ruled for nearly 200 years, during which they built magnificent Hindu and Jain temples that still stand as marvels of Indian architecture. However, in the 14th century, invasions by Alauddin Khilji’s and Muhammad Tughlak’s armies brought the dynasty to an end. The city was plundered of its immense wealth and treasures, leading to its decline. The name Halebeedu itself means “old house” or “ruins,” symbolizing its lost grandeur.
Despite the destruction, a few temples survived, and today Halebeedu is renowned for its extraordinary stone sculptures and intricate carvings that continue to mesmerize visitors from across the world.
