Walkeshwar Temple,Mumbai : Walkeshwar temple is amid the several earlier old temple of Mumbai having deserved a legacy position for its structure & fame around the worshippers.Gradually made by the Silharas all over 1050 years earlier on Malabar Hill .Walkeshwar temple acquired its name from Valuka Ishwar meaning ‘Lord of Sand.’One of the oldest formation on the plot is the Venkateshwar Balaji temple,a Peshwa time with a wooden canopy ,secure from 1789.One more dignified formation is the Rameshwar temple, apparently built in 1825.All the temples are in terrible want of archietectural renovation & purification .Mythology has it that the Walkeshwar temple was made by Ram ,who sent his brother Lakshman to Benaras to obtain a shivlinga to be fixed here.Prior it could be considered ,he had an substitute constructed from sand. According to epic, the Hindu god Ram halt at this place ,on his way from Ayodhya to Lanka in aim of the demon Ravana who had captured his wife ,Sita.He yielded a lingam made of sand ,later having tired of delay for his brother, Lakshman to bring a lingam for puja.The name is derived from the Sanskrit name for an image made of sand -Valuka Ishwar.When Ram was thirsty , as ,there was no active water freely accessible,he shot an arrow & brought Ganga over here.Hence Bana ( i.e.arrow in sanskrit) Ganga.The water that fills the tank arise from an underground spring at that place including the nearness to the sea.The temple & the absorbed Banganga Tank were constructed in 1127 AD by Lakshman Prabhu ,a minister in the court of Silhara dynasty kings who ruled Thane, & the Islands of Mumbai during 810 to 1240AD . The temple was knocked down by the Portuguese during their power in Mumbai,in the 16th era.The temple was renovated by Mumbai businessman & donor,Rama Kamath ,a saraswat Brahmin in 1715.The temple has been basically repaired since then. The Banganga Tank ,located in the Walkeshwar temple ,performs as the venue of Hindustani classical music festival.It is arranged by the Maharashtra Tourism Development Corporation (MTDC), annually in the month of January.In this festival ,one can be a spectator to presentation by genius ,also non proffesional in the field of music.Live musical presentation & show held here attract locals as well as travellers to this holy place..
